Character of the place
Madarao straddles the Nagano-Niigata border. Its reputation rests on tree-runs: marked, gladed, and tucked into mature beech forest that catches the prevailing Siberian wind perfectly. Average snowfall here is among the deepest of any commercial ski resort in Japan — call it thirteen metres in a good year — and the lift queue at 9 a.m. is usually no one.
Who tends to buy here
Off-piste skiers and snowboarders who care more about tree-run density than nightlife. Tends to attract Australians and Singaporeans who've outgrown Niseko.
